Revision Hip Replacement
Revision hip replacement surgery is necessary when some or all of a previous hip surgery has proven to be unsuccessful or is causing discomfort and complications. The treatment required will vary greatly depending on the individual patient’s reaction to their initial hip replacement.
Revision options may be required for several reasons, such as:
- Instability of the hip
- Failure of the socket or stem which can lead to loosening and the gradual decline in effectiveness
- Infection
- Fracture around the prosthesis, destabilising the initial treatment
A specialist surgeon will thoroughly explain the procedure in detail and inform you of the benefits and risks of treatment. The procedure may entail a change of the cup, stem or both and may also require an insertion of bone graft, along with other augments. In some instances, such as infection, patients may even require a period of treatment with an antibiotic cement spacer. This is called staged revision of the hip and has been successfully used on a number of patients.
